Found a new date.. • Sep • 5 Sat The Orange Peel Asheville, NC 09:00 PM Ozric Tentacles on sale:Fri, 07/24/09 12:00 PM Yay! Perhaps another tour leg is starting, and it may seem, with a nod toward a chance to involve more southeasternly US shows this outing! Looks like I will be more likely to catch them this go 'round... I am so glad that the Ozrics are coming back to Asheville. I saw a gig date for Sept 4th at the Visulite in Charlotte NC too! I saw the date on pollstar.com

Just bought my tickets to the Green Mountain Eco Fest to see the Ozrics in the Ozarks on Sept 25. It will be my first time seeing them and I can't wait. But I'm surprised that there has been little discussion of this event here and elsewhere on the 'net. A remote campground next to a clear running stream in the woods and the Ozrics and Particle playing on consecutive nights - Am I the only one who thinks that this will be paradise on earth for $50?

more notes on the shows I caught ATL + Asheville... Sure all have caught the other thread with the ATL setlist. many thanks to all for sharing... masquerade is a neat venue... there was a thumping arising from the club downstairs on the 'hell' level (or maybe it was coming from 'purgatory' [ozric played on the upstairs 'heaven' level]), cracked me up when Ed danced a jig to the bass thumping through the floor between songs... all in all spendid to see the band and impressed by the set, seemed to end quick but it was an intimate night with maybe a hundred folks or so at times attending. onto Asheville which I, personally, enjoyed much more, great turnout, set lasted roughly 2h10m, seems to have been as follows:
oi, og ha be, mooncalf, (acoustic) saucers > (acoustic + synth) jam (not on setlist) , (acoustic) sunscape, new song!?!(very structured not on setlist), erpland, pyramidion, invisible carpet, the throbbe, white rhino tea, hup ho world, jurassic shift, sploosh!, E: tidal
freakin' magical night mix was spendid greatness all around!
oh yeah... not the slightest bit of merch or flyers at either show I caught... only the ticket stub... oh well... guess I should shop at the online portal from the band site for now, I heard that for the moment that was the only merch outlet with inventory. I was saving $s to spluge on show merch cause I thought'd help the band profit more... guess theres' always next time...
I will type more later...

Question- did they sell ozric merchandise at any of the gigs? it did not appear they were selling anything at the asheville gig? i was hoping to pick up the yumyum tree at the show. Brand spanking new member, first post. I was wondering the same thing since I wanted to buy a t-shirt at the ProgDay show, and figured I'd go straight to the source. Ed said that they had not brought any merchandise with them on this mini-tour, so I was forced to pick up another gift for the better half. I have a Zoom H4 recording of the ProgDay show, but it needs some work. Meanwhile keep an eye out on Dime, because another taper said his came out really well, and with his permission, I may try to sync the two and see if any good comes out of it. The guitar was a bit low in the live mix, so don't expect any miracles, but you never know with these things until you start working with them. I'd heard they were doing "It's A Hup Ho World", but "Invisible Carpet"... now that'd have really been something. Unfortunately, 2 of the prior 3 bands couldn't get their act together as they were trying to shoot video, and the ProgDay folks, being the laid back type, let them go well past their designated times. Needless to say, the music was mindless neo-pop-prog to begin with, and only a few real die-hards were even watching them with any interest. Since the stage and the grounds weren't lit, the Ozric segment of the concert was cut short by darkness, but I was still blown away, with Oliver Seagle being especially impressive. Someone in another thread asked whether some of the other bands were good, and being too lazy to find that message again, I'll just say that Qui was the real surprise of the festival, and featured an extremely spastic... and capable... duo on drums and percussion. And if you like Italian symphonic prog, you cannot go wrong with La Maschera Di Cera. They have the style of olde down pat, and showed it. Deluge Grander has a top notch keyboard player, but it just seems that they're missing something in the music writing department. Maybe they should give the guitarist a few more things to do, as he seemed bored at times. Others there liked them plenty though. No denying the talent French TV sports, but that extreme avant prog style is not for everyone. Brave has some potential and a couple of really good songs, but they need a few fixes, starting with the rhythm section. Mörglbl could not be there because of visa problems, and I was pretty upset at the time, especially considering the cost and planning that went into this little excursion of mine, but OT made up for a whole lot of that with their set. Hope that answers your question, and more.

I suppose a setlist might be helpful.
Sept. 6, 2009 ProgDay, Storybook Farm, Chapel Hill, NC
O-I Og-Ha-Be Mooncalf Saucers/Jam Sunscape Erpland Pyramidion The Throbbe White Rhino Tea Sploosh!
There may have been a little noodling after "Sunscape" as well, and perhaps one other song, so I'll have to hear the tape again and consult the gig guide to see what the accepted standard for that is these days. No question about "Saucers", though. Afterward, Brandi said something like "We have no idea what that was." At any rate, the main titles are correct on the rest of the set.

Hello Tangy I was at a gig in 2006 and they was selling T-shirts from a tour of 2004, after that they seemed to no longer sell merch' on tour. That is here in the U.K.

Beezer, you are new to this site but it seems you are not new to O.T. how long have you known about OZRICS perhaps you could share with us your intro. Thanks the nutter. Actually, I've been lurking on the Mikes page (which I'm guessing is related to this board) since I got my first internet connection in 1995. At one time, I was even a member of the fan club, and subscribed to a newsletter called Tentacles Of Erpmind, or something to that effect. My introduction to OT came in the Spring of '92, when a fellow UTD student and I were up late one night, suitably chemicalized, and writing programs for a Numerical Analysis class. At the time, there was a show on the local "people's" station, KNON, called The Deep End, that aired from 2 to 4 am on Tuesday nights, and that night, PJ "The Not Ready For Prime Time DJ" happened to play "Space Between Your Ears". My pal had previously heard that song on The Deep End, and then proceeded to talk me out of changing the station when I was less than impressed with it at first. My tastes were a lot different back then, and that dub-style intro didn't fit them. So I left the dial alone and went back to working on 4th order Runge Kutta problems or whatever. Some minutes later, it occurred to me that I was no longer able to function as a sentient human being, as the guitar solo had completely transfixed me, and my complete attention along with it. Looking back now, that split-second decision to leave the receiver alone and hear the song out may be the single most self-defining moment in my life. Within a week, I had all the available Ozric CDs (luckily there was a nearby progressive rock outlet called RPM Records where one could find that sort of music), and listened to little else for who knows how long. I also started following The Deep End show, mostly by taping to reel-to-reel, then picking out the best songs and transferring them to cassette for playback at more "normal" hours. Before discovering Ozrics, I suppose I was mostly into metal since we had a local band you may have heard of called Pantera that I'd been following since the late 80s. Before that, naturally, it was blues, as there was another regional act in SRV at the epicenter of that particular scene - one I still consider to be the last great commercially viable movement in rock music's storied, and now thoroughly corrupted history. Before that, it was the standards for anyone growing up on radio and not-so-radio rock in the late 70s and early 80s: Zep, Floyd, Yes, Rush, Zappa, Priest, Maiden, etc. with a particular emphasis on Floyd, and early Floyd at that, even before I started eating psychedelics like they were candy - well, come to think of it, they *were* candy! I strayed a little bit into the less common progressive rock and space rock with the likes of Focus, pre-Schenker UFO, and that ilk, and knew from my experience with Golden Earring's superb US version of Moontan that often the "radio hits" are among the weaker tracks on a given album, but at the time, to me anyway, Eloy was a race of people from H.G. Wells - The Time Machine and Magma the stuff that came out of volcanoes. Nearly two decades later, I'm happy to count myself among the more passionate proggers on the planet, and have absorbed some of the knowledge that goes with that, for instance, being able to tell the difference between Kollektiv and Missus Beastly. And it all started with Ozric Tentacles. This was only the second time I'd ever seen them live, and not coincidentally, the second time I'd ever teared up after a concert. They have only made it down this way one time, during the Fall 1994 Arborescence tour. The club they played, Trees, has just reopened, and has the best sound of any venue in the entire region, so in my brief chat with Ed before the show, I urged him to please consider doing it again. In my most non-humble opinion, Ozrics are at their best in a live setting, as virtually all truly great bands are, and to that end I've collected as many bootlegs as I can find on Dime, DC hubs, newsgroups, blogs, and even Soulseek, although the latter is a real POS as software (and rollback capabilities) go. If a Slsk transfer is interrupted, and even sometimes when it's not, a sync error is often the result. But we take what we can get, when we can get it.... One of the things that attracted me into joining this forum is seeing how many truly intense, knowledgeable Ozrics fans there are here. It's not often you run across someone who could pick out "Invisible Carpet" from an OT setlist without knowing beforehand that it would be included, but here we have it in the thread for the post of the recent Atlanta show. I chanced to meet a fellow freak from Odense, Denmark several years ago in another online forum where OT were the topic du jour, and he had gone so far as to frame and take pictures of his tickets to the Nov. 2007 concert at Loppen in Christiania, only to be completely crushed when the band were forced to cancel. For his sake, I hope they do make it there again, so that he can share in the ultimate space prog experience.

thanks for the comments about the other bands at prog day. that was me who asked in the other thread. sounds like you had a great time. it must of been nice to see OT outside. i just can't understand not selling merchandise at the gigs? the more OT shirts on the street the better! You're more than welcome. Many of these shows will soon be available on Dime, so we have that to look forward to. I'm fairly pleased with the Ozrics tape we were able to produce, but it needs some work, and I want to see how this other fellow's came out first before deciding what to do with it. It was a fabulous time, not only for the attendees, but the bands as well. Brandi in particular was having a blast during the OT set, and came out into the crowd during "The Throbbe", dancing with the folks and pulling on a hand-rolled cigarette. Ed commented at the beginning of the segment that it was nice to see the audience for a change. It must have reminded him of the long gone Stonehenge days, because he seemed to be really enjoying himself as well, despite his acoustic guitar breaking down prior to the show. There was no stage lighting, but plenty of camera flashes going off to keep the strobe-like atmosphere going. And, yes, it's a crying shame they didn't bring merchandise. I was certainly not alone in being disappointed at not being able to load up with Ozric goodies.

Thanks for the story Beezer.I have awarded you karma. Why thank you! So how much karma is being able to pick out all the sources of Live Ethereal Cereal worth to ya? Ha ha! Actually, and this is an indictment on my sanity, or lack thereof, I think I've got all the parts that come from The Crypt, Alder Valley Bus Garage and Doris' Birthday Party nailed, but it's been a long time since I've looked at that, and I don't have a good copy of the latter or Glastonbury to make much more headway on the project. Also, just when I get back into town, it looks like I'll be on the road again tomorrow, so expect additional delays in getting the ProgDay show up for the kind folks here to enjoy. But there will be an alternate source available very soon on Dime, and that is something to look forward to. So what's the preferred method for sharing here? I'm only a member of the one tracker, but could always put stuff up on Mediafire or Megaupload or one of those places if that's acceptable.

My musical taste was similar to that of yours but I have been a life long fan of Steve Winwood esp' those early days of Traffic this was in the 70's. In the 80's I had truly lost my way, had silly hair cuts and was into romantics and Depeche Mode. I been looking for something that would satisfy my taste for rock fused with tecno and then one day a French friend who was into Tang' Dream and J.M.Jarre lent me a couple of O.T cds. I had struck gold This was in 2002. 4months and I had bought the back catologue.

I had struck gold This was in 2002. 4months and I had bought the back catologue. We all went through phases in the development of our musical tastes. There was the punk thing in the late 70s, and of course, new wave in the early 80s. You're welcome to take away some karma for this, but I'm not all that ashamed to admit that I saw Madness, Missing Persons and The Human League (ugh!) live in about a year's timeframe around my 18th birthday. Naturally, for anyone into classic rock, Low Spark and John Barleycorn are absolutely essential albums (and ones I proudly sport in my collection on both vinyl and CD), not to mention the three Traffic albums that preceded them. Stomu Yamash'ta - Go would be another, but that was one many of us didn't discover until much later. Yes, Ozric Tentacles are a whole new ballgame, and looking at the legions of followers like Hidria Spacefolk, Melting Euphoria and Quantum Fantay, it's clear they are a highly influential one as well.
