As you may or may not know I am currently studying for a guitar diploma exam . The 1st part I will be taking Saturday 16th June 07 . I have found the studies to be really inspiring and I am hoping that I can share some of this inspiration with each of you .
There is one section of the exam which I thought we could exchange ideas on . It's called "Knowledge Of the Instrument "
The answers will form a part of a written test and each answer should in no way exceed 100 words .Four or five lines should be sufficient .
Here is an example of the range of some of the questions asked:
I) In which ways was "insert guitarist of your choice here " and innovator ?
ii) describe the guitar style of "insert guitarist of your choice here " ?
iii) How did "insert guitarist of your choice here "
influence the future of electric guitar playing ?
iv)describe the specialist techniques used by "insert guitarist of your choice here ".
v)Describe some of the main differences between a "insert guitar of your choice here " and "insert another guitar of your choice here "
all help appreciated . with thanks Damien

hey i passed this part of the exam 78% out of 100% 75% being a pass . unfortunatly , the practical part of the exam i failed with 71% ... main areas i lost marks were on my rhythm and lead playing , i need to work on interpreting and followoing form and delveloping more stylistic awareness and cohesion between lead phrases . next time i do even better , focus my learning more !!

Cohesion in ozric tentacles music ,
reference :
The scared turf 02.36 solo is very similar to one from a track called dunkirk 0.49 on an album called "snowgoose "(1975) by camel
plasmoid uses synths as textural devises, low oscillationing frequencies, asymetrical timesignatures (19/16 ? ) and a gradual acellerando (similar to the one used by steve hillage at the end of the track hurdy gurdy man on the album "L" (1976) ) to create a sense of disorientation.

Yeah but Plasmoid is still naff. I hate that tinny synth sequence. Congratulations on part passing your exam btw!

Plasmoid naff ? off with his head !
I wonder if scared turf is actually "sacred turf" from "there is nothing.."
scared turf, this is what happens when you threaten to "Kick Muck".

I love the last album (with revised running order) and Spirals before it, just have a bit of a sticking point with the aforementioned track. But I don't want to dwell on it, 95% success rate is pretty good! I must look through my old CDs for other horrified horticulture references... Joni Mitchell's Hissing of Summer Lawns takes on a whole new meaning....

hi damien. yeah well done for passing the exam. cant imagine how difficult it must have been and how much disipline it must have took.fair play.
on another note thou,as a songwriter and several musical instrument player i always find inspiration for learning new stuff on the guitar by listning to jimi hendrix-a particular track that always inspires me is a track called 1983 on the electric ladyland album.
i,ve never learned to read music thou. am i stiflling myself by not doing so?. does it make any process of writing tunes any easier? will i learn new notes on the fretbord in an order i normally wouldnt think off? q,sq,s q,s eh.haha. any help appreciated mate. cheers. meds

good morning meds, Thank you for your kind words ,it is/was quite difficult the thoery test involved 3 hours of writing (man my hand ached after that ! ) As you are "a song writer and you play many instruments" i would say you would benifit from reading music. another overlooked area is aural awareness (listening skills ) everything from transcribing to recognising chord types and rhtyhms . In regards to "1983" the jimi hendrix track , there is this section with descending notes which transposes and then slightly alters its form . classical musicians describe this as a musical "cell " the techno group "orbital" are a good example of popular music using "cells" a musical "cell" is a basically a repeating motif, which slighty alters on each repitition . last night i was reading a book of jazz standards then i put some chords to a piece , after that and watching "misery" on tv , i got out the pen paper and wrote this : i found it a quite relaxing process to unwind before sleep !

ive just written a riff called "monkey funk "
id really like to write some drums for it next , so if you don't play guitar maybe you can at least bang on the kitchen pots ! but you really should play guitar , its more fun than playstation !
