When it first came out, I found Swirly to be a bit patchy, but over the years it's grown on me a lot. I have always known that's it's culled from odds and ends - but I still think its a compelling listen and flows well regardless. Wikipedia says ""Though released in 2000 this record contains songs made as early as 1992." but I haven't seen any more detail than that.
Does anyone have any more specific information on the recording dates for these songs? My best guesses from sound/feel are below. To be honest, none of them seem to be from 1992 though - especially as they weren't signed to Snapper then.
Steep, Far Dreaming and Waldorfdub sound sort of Waterfall Cities era Space Out sounds like the Spice Doubt recording, so I'm guessing its 98, (like the Kick Muck version) Pyoing could be Arborescene era? Yoy Mandala - Curious Corn sessions? Earlier?

I bought the original version when it came out too, but the repress/reissue has some notes by Simon "Eddie" Baker about the story of each track.
Steep 1992 Ed on his own, testing the studio at the Mill Space Out 1998 Pyoing - recorded to be tagged at the end of Yog-Bar-Og but left out Waldorfdub recorded at the same time (Arborescence sessions) Far Dreaming & Yoy Mandala with Rad & Seaweed, time unspecified Kick 98 remix by Ed after listening to the Floating Seeds Remixed album.
I've always liked it by the way, sure it feels a bit patchy but the tunes range from good (Pyoing, Waldorfdub) to very good (Steep, Far Dreaming) to excellent (the other three) IMO.

I've always rather liked the album too, though I didn't know for years that it was recorded at different times. I should have guessed as the drums on Pyoing sound the same as Arboresence.
Posted previously by Ozhead on this forum if you want the detailed version:
From 'Simon Eddie baker's sleeve notes. 'Steep' - a track Ed recorded on his own back in 1992, after having recently moved to the Mill with his new 24 track studio. Steep was a track recorded to test the capabilities of the new desk, which must have passed with flying colours as the production is crystal and makes for a blissful opener. 'Space out' - is the studio version of 'Spice Doubt', originally featured on the internet - broadcast album of the same name and the most recent recording on this album, recorded at Pilgrim cottage in 1998. 'Pyoing' - is the rather aptly named third track. This was originally the end of 'Yog-Bar-Og' ( and therefore features previous drummer Merv and synth player Joie) from the Arborecence album, a track that was already nearly ten minutes long without this extra section. The story goes that 'Yog'....was recorded after a particularly heavy 'psychedelic' evening and simply went too mad at the end of this section to be included! Luckily it was saved and is now featured hear in all it's mad glory.'Waldorf Dub' too is from the same time and features some nice deep dubby bass lines from Zia. 'Far dreaming' and 'Yog Mandala' were from one of the many jam sessions recorded at the Mill with Rad and Seaweed, who replaced the aforementioned Merv and Joie. Spiced up and rearranged by Ed, 'Yoy'.. in particular is a sparkling oasis, with Eastern vocals and a beautiful bit of soloing from Ed himself. Which leaves 'Kick 98', Ed's own remix of Kick Muck recorded after hearing some of the results of the remix album 'Floating Seeds'.
