Hmph.. I started off sequencing my tracks in Cubase - happy as Larry - and found that my shiny new machine has a LATENCY problem that my old one didn't have. So much for Moore's law I've mostly been trying to resolve that. If anyone here knows about ASIO drivers and such, I'd be grateful for any help. I take back everything I said in the other thread about PC recording being easier. * * * * * * I'm still determined to deliver - ERPRIFF - SPACE BETWEEN YOUR EARS .. I just hope no one needs 'em next week. or the week after

I wouldn't have thought there was a rush Mick. I have a pongmaster and a dusty pouch done so I can crack on with my own tunes again now

www.asio4all.com/I had the same issue when I changed to a laptop a few years back, the latency was unbelievably bad - OK now though.

I think latency issues were one of the main reasons my already technically challenged head gave up on computer recording.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'd already gone down the ASIO4ALL route and got the latency down to 9 ms (from something ridiculous like 109 ms). That doesn't sound like much, but audio recordings still sound late to me. They say you begin to hear a difference above 5 ms. If you can hear any difference, it might as well be 9 minutes late IMO.
Any other suggestions welcome. I've heard that Sonar doesn't have the latency problems. Thing is, I'd really miss Cubase's VST instruments.

"... Thing is, I'd really miss Cubase's VST instruments. "
You can still use VST's in Sonar...
If you went with a Firewire interface (like the RME Fireface 400, or 800, the Presonus Firebox, or Firestudio, or even the M-Audio ProFire series) you're latency issues will be dramatically reduced...to the point of actually being able to punch-in on a track!

Cheers, Jmac.
Can you use the use the same Cubase VSTs with Sonar straight out of the box? - i.e. without having to chase more drivers, plugins etc? All that palaver does wonders for your creativity.
I'm sure you're right about Firewire interfaces, but would I be right in thinking there might be prohibitive hassle & expense for someone who isn't all that serious about recording these days?
It's a few years since I've done any home recording. TBH, I'm gobsmacked that latency is still such a big problem, considering the horsepower of the average PC these days. I got better basic sound on sound years ago with Cakewalk (moan, moan..).

But well worth it - a cracker, just as Philly says. You have nailed it, sir, and I take my hat off to you. Somebody fetch that man a pongmaster!

Yes, VST instruments and plug-ins are stored in a directory that is accessible to any application that uses VST's. I recently installed Native Instrument's "Komplete" and can see each synth in Cubase, Sonar, Logic, and Pro-Tools.
As far as the price of firewire interfaces, they are much the same as the price of a good guitar or keyboard...its just a matter of how it suits your needs. You can get a firewire interface for as little as $200 (m-audio's firewire solo) or $2000 (RME fireface 800)
;D

I'll have to check this out when I get a spare moment in between picking up the shattered pieces that once went together in the shape of my computer. Yes I had a crash and lost data Yes I am an idiot (I kept a backup but it was three weeks old No I didn't really take to it with an axe... much...

Seems I am well behind in all this. I know I volunteered to put this together, (by that I mean really just a simple master, balance levels, gaps between tracks and work out a running order) but not really sure what the plans are for compiling. Assuming everyone would prefer this to be a physical CD in the end, I can compile it so long as someone else can do artwork and printing (I don't have a printer) Maybe it would be easiest if any finished tracks were uploaded to a file hosting site like rapidshare rapidshare.com/ then I can download them, (you'd just need to send me the download link). That's probably the easiest option for big files like wav. Otherwise if you prefer snail mail, feel free to email me for a postal address. eternal underscore wheel at yahoo dot com dot au Cheers
