Hello, I'm new to the forum because I really enjoy prog rock and the music of Ozric Tentacles.
One thing you must know about me, though - I am COMPLETELY drug-free. And I am very proud to be able to say that. =) Don't try and persuade me to do them - it ain't gonna happen! I'm straightedge, so I'm totally against recreational drugs. You might say that it is hypocritical for an anti-drug person to into a druggy band, but if I only listened to drug-free artists, I wouldn't have much to listen to. It's very likely that I am the only drug-free person here (possibly the only drug-free Ozric fan in the entire world!), but I do not mind, as long as this forum is active enough for discussion.
I am also a progressive rock musician myself and this band has become one of my many inspirations over time, with Genesis, Porcupine Tree, Mike Oldfield and Camel being my main ones. Prog is my favourite genre by far, I love it dearly, as well as many other genres from the 50s to present, and being able to play prog on my keyboard is a pleasure. I hope to be able to record and sell my music someday.

Hi tt454. I don't think you are the only person here who doesn't do drugs. I reckon I must have enjoyed Ozrics music as much with as without aid. However, vape, can I have some please?

Still rather upsetting to me that so many people today do them. =( Progressive rock music is already brilliantly varied and complex so I've had no need for it, and I can't see why anyone would. However I am glad that at least there might be other people on this forum who are like me, so perhaps I'm not alone. To me Ozric's music is not drug music, it's just awesome, atmospheric instrumental prog music, that can be fast, slow, heavy, gentle, weird, straightforward, lively, melancholic, ancient, futuristic or any combination of these. I also love their world music tracks, because I love different world cultures and the music that represents them.

Drugs surely played a role in the development of bands like Ozrics (as with Hawkwind) and many others. But I'm sure they'd be the first to admit that the drugs were not what it was all about, they were/are just part of the scene. It's totally incidental to me as a listener, and seems an odd thing to be bothered by. As for the fans, some listeners of prog and spacey music will be enhanced, others not - does it matter? No judgement needed either way. The point is the music, if it's good, will take you on a journey regardless... P.S you have some good taste tt454. Camel are a great band.

I totally agree with etherealise's comment. I can't quite see how what others do can be upsetting if it has no effect on me. Since you like Camel and Ozrics I would recommend checking out Quantum Fantay if you haven't already done so tt454.
On a personal note, I seem to enjoy complex, layered music in general, though I don't listen to prog rock at all anymore. Unless you count the Ozrics, who I consider more psychedelic than prog/technical. And the occasional Floyd - looking forward to their new release in fact.

I can't quite see how what others do can be upsetting if it has no effect on me. I thought the reasoning was obvious. =/ Drugs can be very dangerous and completely change you as a person. I would never willingly break laws (provided that those drugs are illegal in your area) just to enjoy music that's already massively enjoyable, yet millions upon millions do every single day. The thought of doing them terrifies me, and gives me a lower opinion of society because of negatively they have affected it. Drugs are depressing to me. Back in the 50s/60s/70s it was more understandable; the world was a darker, less developed place and people needed them to get by and make change happen. But nowadays, after so much improvement in technology, healthcare, civil rights, etc. I assumed most of the world would have moved from it. But now a vast number of songs on the radio today promote them. Recreational drugs are inescapable part of modern culture, and are connected to countless negative circumstances. That's my reasoning for disliking them so much. I wouldn't care about them if they weren't so annoyingly mainstream. Just last week, I was in HMV and this absolutely dreadful rap song was playing, all about getting high and drunk, like most rap songs, and I was disgusted. That's why I'm okay with the Ozrics' drug use - at least they use it to make awesome music and not abysmal rap music (apologies to anyone who likes that genre). Anyway, I'm currently listening to the Ozric track "Train Oasis", one of my favourites from them. It's so beautiful and magical, it really does paint the picture of a steam train travelling through a sultry oasis. A shame it's not very long. Also, it's one of the few Ozric songs that I can immediately recall. Most of them I get mixed up because of the lack of vocals.

welcome tt, I kind of feel you are being a bit preachy, with the next thing you're saying (after liking the ozrics) is that you are anti drugs... I'm sure it doesn't matter to anyone on here whether you take drugs or not... may I humbly suggest you worry less about other people and enjoy your own drug free life... me... well, I've had another hard day at work and I'm about to smoke myself cross-eyed... wheeee

tt, without trying to change your mind, your view is rather uninformed, plus you seem to think all drugs are the same and all people take them for the same reasons. I will readily admit that some drugs can be harmful, but then again even riding your bike can be harmful if you fall off it . TV can be harmful if you believe everything they say on it, etc. It all depends on use.
So, what have you heard so far and what do you like? Do you enjoy all the facets of Ozrics' music?

So, what have you heard so far and what do you like? Do you enjoy all the facets of Ozrics' music? I have heard most of their albums, and the facets of their music I enjoy are the heavy/fast, guitar solos, the electronic effects, the progressiveness and the range of instruments they use. I like how much is going on in their songs, and the images they bring to the mind, and that's generally why I enjoy prog. It's colourful, artsy, melodic and complex music. Some of my favourites are (in a random order): Stretchy Waterfall City Spyroid Holohedron Sunscape Afroclonk Half Light In Thillai Oddentity Train Oasis Ch'ai? Aura Borealis Crackerblocks My three favourite Ozric albums are: Erpland Waterfall Cities Curious Corn

Cool. You say you like the fast ones but I see you have some more chilled tunes there and some ethnic stuff. Do you enjoy the techno-y side of things like Sploosh or the screaming synths on Waterfall City? Are there any 80s tracks you like? I don't want to repeat myself and I've mentioned what I like on older threads, so I'll just say my absolute faves are Erpland, Strangeitude, Waterfall Cities and Live Underslunky and direct you to this thread: ozrics.proboards.com/thread/1848/multiple-favourites

Erpland is the bomb. Yet I have listened to it less than most of the others. Strange but I think I approach it with almost a degree of trepidation, because it is so good.

Good summary etherialize.. it's intensity gives an impression that you might accidentally take off when you did not want to.

I'm someone who has never "imbibed", as it were. I even joked with Ed about it once. As he said at the time, the music will get us if we let it. I most definitely let it! I'm not anti-drug at all - it's merely personal preference. Lots of love!

Although I enjoyed a few mushroom trips years ago, I discovered the Ozrics afterwards, so other than the times I've had a beer or two while listening, I've always enjoyed the music without any "enhancement". Music this good doesn't need it, but I've nothing against others enjoying music (and life) as they see fit, as long as they are not hurting anyone else in the process.
