Just recived this e-mail..
Greetings to all you Hazers,
I know that this announcement is long overdue and most of you are probably wondering what has happened to Eastern Haze and why we have been so quiet since the festival in July.
The stark truth is that unfortunately Eastern Haze is no more. A combination of several factors, including some of the worst weather this country has seen, means that Eastern Haze failed to make enough money to cover its costs. As a result Hazy Promotions is in the process of insolvency and will not be able to organise any more events.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the people who made Eastern Haze such a special event. All of the bands, artistes and performers who entertained you, all the workshop facilitators who came to pass on their skills, all the stalls and caterers who provided food and stuff to buy, all of the contractors who provided their services, all of the staff who came and worked in very difficult circumstances, all the volunteers who worked so hard to bring this event together, Somerleyton Estate for allowing the festival to happen there and last but by no means least all of you who bought tickets to come to the wonderful grounds of Somerleyton Estate for Eastern Haze 2007. I would also like to take this opportunity to sincerely apologise to all of those who have been affected by the negative consequences of the event.
It has been very unfortunate that the event has gone the way that it has because, from the feedback, it seems as if the majority of you had a wonderful time, despite the weather and the consequent problems that occurred. We received many glowing ‘thank yous’ from many attendees and some very favourable press reviews praising the diversity and range of entertainment and activities present at the event as well as the value for money and non-inflated prices at the festival. However, as a small independent organisation with no major financial backing, we were dependant on the support of our volunteers to help us put this together and totally reliant on the sale of tickets to cover the cost of the event. The weather put off a lot of people and even made it impossible for some of them to physically get to the event.
The terrible weather of this summer has had a catastrophic effect on many events this year and was the cause of (or helped to compound) many of the problems that we faced. The state of the ground after a summer of constant rain stretched our resources too far and made some tasks very hard indeed, from the setting up period right the way through to the final clear up. It is a sad fact that these problems were then further added to by the inappropriate actions and attitudes of certain members of the organisational team and their failure to discharge their responsibilities properly by walking away from the event organisation and leaving it to others to clear up and try to sort out their mess. In fact it has fallen entirely upon myself to actually try and resolve this horrendous situation and to try to bring closure to what was hoped to be the realisation of many peoples dreams of a community based, non-commercialised festival in East Anglia. It is likely that part of the bankruptcy proceedings will be a restriction in me being able to direct any events like this for the foreseeable future. However, I do have fifteen years of knowledge and experience in my head which I am prepared to share with anyone who is serious about trying to put together an event – please contact me on seb@easternhaze.com if you want to discuss any issues. I can’t guarantee that I will be able to respond to all emails, that will depend on how many I receive, but I will do my utmost to answer any questions that I can, within the scope of my ability to do so.
A big thank you to all of you who posted up pictures and video on sites like Flikr and YouTube and finally tune into ITV1 at 10pm on Tuesday 6th November, Tuesday 13th November and Tuesday 20th November when Eastern Haze is part of the “Summer of Noise” programme being broadcast then. Who knows, you could be on the tellybox!!
Wishing everyone of you all the very best for the future and maybe we will meet in the corner of some festie field somewhere, somewhen, somehow.
