Who apart from Ed, do reckon through the years has had the most influence on the sound of the music and the direction of the band...For me I'd say Jon Egan, he kind of optimized the ethos of the band while he was there, and i also think Seaweed added something unique as well. It sounds as though now, its Brandi who does the organizing and pulls the string, to Leave Ed to create the music...

yeah, without ANY DOUBT whatsoever.... it's the incredible amazing Roly Wynne... i think he's still there, in fact, standing beside his brother in the studio and on stage even now...
if you listen to some of those early gigs, you can often hear how Roly would just take off in another direction during a track, and the rest of them would follow him, off to some unexplored new territory...

Have to agree with you posters above (hej philly), its easily roly for me too...i thought his bass "made" the tracks often just as much as the guitar riffs/solos or synth arps.

As much as i think Roly was a great bass player, and the best evidence of that for me is Live Ethereal Cereal. When Jon joined the band, he added another dimension and gave the Ozrics another avenue to explore with his flute playing. Secondly, the reason i put forward Seaweed is because when Joie left, he was a tough act to follow and huge void to fill, but Seaweed came in and from Aborescence onwards, the tunes lent torwards the soundscapes and synthesizers more so than before, where before they complemented Ed's guitar playing, now the synths were more integral to the music and it was as much about the keyboards as was about Eds guitar solo's, hence for that period he was in the band, apart from Ed, I'd say he had the most influence on the way the music sounded.

apart from ed and roly, i'd have to say the most influential members of the ozrics have been (at various times)... joie, merv, tig, gavin, paul, seaweed, zia, rad, john, marcus, tom steve, generator john , rad, stuart, metro, jonny, pazza, hal, brandi, oliver, justin, ....

As a latecomer to the band ( 2001) I would have to choose Seaweed. I can remember the first time I saw him on stage, the whole package was right - his 'prescence'- his mighty dreads - his ethereal sounds - totally emersed in his playing, taking the band to some other world. I tip my hat to Joie, but Seaweed really explored his keyboards and synth and took the band to musical places where few have ventured. I am listening to 'Pixel Dream' as I write - beautiful!

i (really) have to agree... seaweed was a huge factor, as was zia and rad too... that line-up (no offense to any of the others) was the tightest awesomest one that has existed... i'll never forget seeing them for the first time at the wetlands in nyc as long as i live, a truly life-changing experience...

All the members of the band past and present, but especially Joie Hinton.
Joie gave the band his distinctive sound which I always felt was beautiful. Ed and Joie playing together always works well. They compliment each others styles and seem to communicate on a higher level than most musicians do.
But all the members of the band have brought a little something special. There have been many musicians who played with the band live or recorded with them who aren't listed in Sparky's post above, some of them I mention here if only to celebrate their involvement too.
Steve Everitt -Synth (89-90), Ben Smith - fretless bass (1984- 1986), Adam - Bass (1986-1987)

Yeah - exactly my point... He was one of the several bass players stepping in for Roly, I thought... Not convinced that he did any synthy stuff for the Ozrics at all...

vinny is definitely someone who needs to be included here!!!!!
(although i don't deserve to be on this list in any way, i have in no way been an influential member of the band....just wanted to mention i played two ozric gigs!!!!!! ;0)
(sorry....had to say that!!! if they ever write a biography of the band i want my place in it, on page 287476535 in small print at the bottom)!

...but seriously...
i really do mean vinny - he is now fundamental to the direction the bands taking, and the live sound of the band...
however i have to agree with the other posters - roly was a genius, and was (next to ed) the single most influential member of the ozrix in my view.
i could name all the past members, since i feel in their own ways everyone who has played in the band has made their own important contributions, however i must also mention seaweed, zia, rad, schoo, justin, pazza, merv and joie.
brandi does need a special mention too - it's my belief (i could be wrong), but i don't think the band would still be around now if it was not for brandi's incredible energy - in addition to that, her incredible bass playing (oakum and disdots being good examples).
interesting thread, this!
oh......almost forgot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mb$!!! Shawn's definitely been influential, not musically but in terms of being an amazing friend....

Let's digress further...
If this is now about mentioning previous band members/session players (eg listing all sorts of bass player types), then I can add more: Alan Hagarty (bass). Actually - why hasn't Hagos been mentioned yet - he was responsible for the live sound for years. And did tour management... Or does that not count? I wonder...

I thought Steve Everrit sampled... (thats whats says on the back of the albums (pungent.effulgent/erpland) anyway, i think everyone has been/is influential in their own way... cause they all have their own unique style.. otherwise they wouldnt have been in ozrics....
cant pick favourites... every song is a different story, every lineup aswell..

Steve played synth several times live with band (see the video of Treworgey tree fayre) as well as sometimes playing bass.
Another Bass player was Kay (of Ullulators) who played several times in 1986.
