Lately been listening to Bob James, albums One, Two and Three. 70's Jazz orientated Ozrics, all instrumental and nicely chilled with ice.

BOARDS OF CANADA , and 'Corsair', is enough to make one dribble from the gob...
Check it out, take the blinkers off...

Hey Steve, Boards of Canada or great, but Geogaddi was definitely their weakest effort...even considering the early tapes. Corsair is a highlight though.
NP: Mr. Velcro Fastener - Telemacho
Finnish electronic artist. They are more electro-dance, but actually this album has Boards of Canada stylings in places. Electronic music with soul, as I like to call it.

Hi Matt.
I actually enjoy Geogaddi, ('Beware The Friendly Stranger', albeit a tiny track, is strangley hypnotic, and those numbers being read out in 'Gyroscope' is super), though I admit to not being up on all their albums. So much of their stuff to listen to as well, and take in. They are good though in what they produce.
Playing the latest OPETH album too, 'Watershed'. Not quite the beast I wanted it to be, but nevertheless, they are a class metal act.

Fripp's work often puzzles me. He plays stuff which sounds, not out of key a such, just.........like this for example! (I'm sure there's an official muso description of it out there!)
I do like this sorta stuff though.

This almost sounds like an insane mess! Fascinating footage from this, sadly, too short lived band. (I have all their albums on vinyl - they only made two, ha!) The ending is superb. You can't beat a smack in the face ending, and just watch the bass player on 1.49. I could watch him all day do this. I laughed and laughed (but then that's just me...)

One of my favourite videos ever the Crimson one Steve. The percieved dissonance of Fripp's playing is down to the fact that he uses lots of symetrical scales based on shapes rather than comfortable musical formulas. You'll hear Zappa do that a lot with the whole tone scale.
And equally funny in the Skid Row clip is the videos naming of the guitarist....Barry Moore!

Ahh, cheers Kev, I had a hunch you'd know :-) and thanks. Yes, Zappa (he was so special, and brought laughter with immense music) is similar in that kinda playing.
I just can't help re watching the bass player in that Skid Row video!!! Funny how a wee thing can hit the spot like that.
Mind you, I have been brought right down to earth by watching the link below, of that same man, but playing lead guitar in some band at a festival in Ireland 1986.
I know these guys can play (as such), but mate, if you can stick through the six minutes or so of it, you will watch and hear some awful stuff. And why the crowd are going so wild is baffling!

Steve, that last clip was indeed awful. And to my ears sounded like the kind of modern American 'punk' band that sings of their Irishness...i.e none at all.

Sorry, I don't mean to hog on, but check this gem out.
If you like quality produced videos, cracking songs, and lovely women dancing in such a seductive way, then take a gander at this.
I'm just laughing way too much for a Sunday morning...........

went and saw my favorite local band tonight. Well, until Ozric Tentacles moved 2 miles down the road. Tuatha tribal fusion ColoRADo style. Gotta love belly dancers.

as to fripp in that clipp i would say he is using atonality in some parts (where you kinda do your own thing like everyone did on beefheart's troutmaskreplica) but in other parts he is just throwing in a large amount of chromatic passing notes - as it is a be-boppy sounding piece this is expected. the violin player is using some large intervals and sliding stops and the bass guitar part seems to change what key it is quite quickly and often during a very short loop containing many notes... it all adds up to be quite atonal, but not so much so that we feel lost in the listening...
