Well, I cant believe it, but 10 years have gone by since I put on a concert in Portland, Oregon featuring Ozric Tentacles, and the band EOTO (featuring members of the string cheese incident), and a then unknown Nico Luminous (now way bigger - ish), and the best part about it was that the show was FREE..
I annouced it here! all those years ago..
As an ozrics fan, this was a very big deal for me, and all kinds of things aligned to make it happen..
Its a very long epic story, but ill take a minute to give you some of the highlights..
Getting to send a letter to ed and fam, spelling out exactly why OT was one of the greatest bands of all time, and why I felt Ed was an exceptional musician..
Imagine.. getting to tell someone like Jerry Garcia, or Jimi Hendrix, someone on that level, why they are such an epic f**k**g player.
That alone was amazing..
Then getting to meet Ed and co was just unreal..
Essentially, the event was held in a souped up warehouse with psychedelic decorations, and some local crystal people brought their tables and we had a mini gem show.., but a heat wave came through, and man was it hot..like 102
So when Ed came by for the soundcheck, in the day, it was sweaty, and just seeing him was psychedelic.. The dude has a deep heavy vibe, like your next to a guy that was in utero soaking in an embryonic sac full of LSD, and was born glowing like a crystal..maybe it was all those years in the Euro scene..haha
He seemed like a psychdelic rock and roll saint..
To be honest, I was a little star struck, but I got over that quick because I had a show to do and musicians from another band I deeply loved were coming soon (string cheese incident)..and I had to keep my game face on, but to me OT music is like god concentrate, so damn i couldnt believe it was happening..
Ed told me that people kept asking him what doing 'way out there', and in a way it seemed like he was asking me 'why did you use your manifestation powers to summon us here', haha, I dont know I love you guys, it was totally selfish.. haha
Really, the timing was perfect because they had just released YumYum tree, and they needed to hit the road to promote it..
The only other time I had seen OT in 3d was at the ill fated supposed shared bill with Particle at the Fillmore in SF, where there was feud between the bands about their stage time, and OT had their power cut in the middle of a song, and stormed off the stage ( I was really really really high haha) yikes!!
So thankfully because I had set this show up in Portland, as an anchor date, they booked a show a day I think before at the independent in SF, which probably wouldnt have happened otherwise (you can thank me later SF OT fans ), hopefully that cleared up some of the energy down there.
But Ed, Brandi, Silas, and the drummer at the time were amazing people.
I acutally got to ask Silas (who I think was 19 at the time) what it was like to have Ed as your dad, who is this like unreal cosmic channeler musician,
and he replied 'its weird' ...haha I bet!, I think Silas has done a great job over the last 10 years..what a cool guy!
In a way I feel like I failed in one of the things I was trying to accomplish though, I never told anyone this, but I did have a secret agenda, in addition to putting on this amazing free show that would be so healing for people..
The thing is I love jambands (the good ones), and I really love the band the string cheese incident, they've always been great, now celebrating their 25th year, but since 2012 and on, they kind of became the Grateful Dead of now, super powerful psychedelic moments..
So I thought it was very fortuitous that the OT fam, had recently relocated to Colorado, since SCI was also based out of Colorado.
Putting this show on, I really thought I could connect the two families, and that the SCI guys in EOTO, (who were very unaware of OTs music, except jason hahn of sci told me he caught part of their set at Wakarusa 2006, where they shared a bill.. sidenote: I HELPED OT GET THAT GIG IN KANSAS BY TALKING TO THE OWNER DIRECTLY and got him to buy and watch the live at the pongmasters ball dvd, which i dont think ot and fam even realize)
would see Ed play and start the connective forces that would bring these people together.
and then, the effects of that would be, at least in my mind, that the jam-band fans of America who love psychedelic music so much, would get turned onto ozric tentacles, and then their American fan basewould grow that much more, when the American hippies realized how many of their favorite live electronic bands had been inspired by ozric tentacles, and of course OT was so much better...haha ..But, i didnt know shit about astrology, and had booked the show right smack in the peak of the dreaded MERCURY RETROGRADE.
So the communication didnt happen... (trait of Mercury retro) no one was ever in the right place at the right time (arrrghh)
and ed's sequncer started failed about 1:25 into their 2+ hour scheduled set, and he could not figure out why (technology failing, another mercury retrograde trait)
Like I said there was a heat wave and the free show was packed, Ed said it might have had something to do with the humidity, but years later I blame mercury... haha
so my vision of OT and SCI collaborating or even hanging out and becoming friends never came to be (they were neighbors for a bit...dammit)
Later of course in 2011 was the fire that did some major damage to the OT world, and then they moved away from CO...
So alas my dream of seeing OT at Red Rocks has yet to come true...
The event was magical and great and I have SBD recordings I might post to the ether one day..
The even COOLER part is that I became friends with the Wynne fam! Whoa! I got to yuck it up on the phone with Brandi a few times, and confirmed ONE OF THE GREATEST STORIES IN THE HISTORY OF MUSIC, which is that George Harrison actually told Ed he should learn to play guitar as a young boy when his father was the sculptor of the beatles.. AND one time she played over the phone some just super epic OT stuff they were working on that was never released
THEN..They offered my a position on their 2010 world tour as their tour manger, jesus talk about a dream coming true, but I was just too green to be honest. I was running a non-profit and putting on shows, but I wasnt very versed in that world...And it was a real world tour: Egypt, Iceland, Russia, jesus....But I didnt have the ability to make it work, and I didnt want them to have to pay me, but then I didnt have the resources to travel around the world for 6 months on my own..
Also, I was a cannabis grower with a high needs crop, and my partner was 3 months pregnant..so theres that..
It wasnt meant to be..
10 years later, I'm super stoked God let me do that, and I really cherish the memories, however brief they were!
but you know...sometimes its hard for me to listen to Ozric Tentacles, I get emotional...why?
Because its such f**k**g epic music, and I dont understand why they didnt get the recognition stateside, and why they didnt get the crowd they so rightfully deserved...it f**k**g pisses me off sometimes..
Im grateful thay they were even able to make that music, but I dont understand why it dint click here in America so much, I mean I already know, they were lightyears ahead of their time...but still..
I watched the Shpongle at Red Rocks live stream a couple of weeks ago...totally sold out 20,000 people or more over two nights total, and it was f**k**g Ozric Tentacles lite..haha
No offense to Simon Posford, shpongle is awesome, and those shows were awesome, and he is a total OT fanboy (like me), but I couldnt help thinking why the f**k wasnt Ed, seaweed, zia, jon up there slaying, they were doing this music before anyone else, and they were the absolute BEST at it..
f**k..
All this new psybass, and psydub, (which I love) who the f**k do think made and developed that sound, all I can hear is Rodney Dangerfield in my head 'i get no respect', ' i get no respect' haha
So I just wanted to drop by here a place where the OG OT fans live, haha and tell a very brief synonpsis of this experience and vent some some other things (thanks for reading)
I love Ozric Tentacles, I love the Wynne family + friends (past, present, future), and I just want to say I was super honored to have crossed paths with them, and I wish them the best!!
Recently I was a featured guest on major american podcast that deals wih jambands and psychedelic music/community called 'No Simple Road'..
I detail more about my wild life, and a little more about the Ozric tentacles story.. you can check it out here
