New member here ... one of the hopeless souls always seeking to get beyond fashion and find real, meaningful experiences in contemporary art and music. I even lived in Colorado for many years (dozens of Red Rocks concerts and local venue shows.) Now I'm in my 50's working in the Middle East ... and NOW I find Ozric Tentacles? That is so F***ed up! Oh well, better late than never, I guess. I'd like to say some cool fellow expat turned me on to OT, but it really was Spotify. (I discover a lot of new music there now and I buy the vinyl of the best.) But, I have just been absolutely blown away by OT's musicianship, album quality, depth of catalog, and band history. It's been like finding this gigantic and rare gemstone stuck inside the seat cushions of some old car you've been driving around for years. It makes you very happy and kind of sad at the same time. To Ed and the whole group (present and past), thanks for everything ... for all of your amazing work over the years, for a fantastic new album (TOTS). I'm late to the party ... but just so happy it's still going on! So, I discovered OT on my Apple Macbook Pro using bluetooth Sony headphones in Saudi Arabia in 2015 ... how did you discover them?

Lovely post man, and welcome. I'm not a huge regular here but I've been a fan since 2001.
I was 15 at that time. I was competing in the band competition of our school, together with my friend and his older brother. During that time, that brother gave me Spice Doubt, with the request that I'd make some copies for the members in his other band. That was really the only reason, he didn't ask me to listen to it. I listened to that CD multiple times, every single day, for the duration of at least a month. Since then I've been a huge fan, and I never got around to making the copies for some reason!
I truly envy you that you're getting to discover all of it for the first time. You might be late, and the Ozrics have had some legendary line-ups (early 90's - early 00's especially), but the 'family' line up is definitely at a huge peak with TOTS and the tour they're doing right now. Plus their excellent catalogue is only bigger now, much more music to discover indeed.
So I discovered them with a CD that was handed to me in The Netherlands, around 2001.
Have a good one mate!

I live near an American air force base/camp in Suffolk called Mildenhall and was invited by an Irish/American who has been a friend since 1974 to her home, she is married to a Frenchman and it is he who introduced me to Ozric Tentacles. He asked me what sort of music I like and I told him space rock he gave me Become the Other and Abericsence which I listened to at home, it took me 2 months to collect back catalogue..... I had struck GOLD.

In the early 90's when I was in my early 20's I used to talk about music with one of my co-workers. In one of those discussions he asked me if I had ever heard Ozric Tentacles, and I said "no" and all he could say was "Oh Man! Ozric Tentacles! Oh Man!". So a few weeks later I stopped in at the local public library and they had a copy of Arborescence (which had just been released) that I borrowed. I listened to it quite a bit during the four weeks I had it on loan, and after I returned it I started scouring local record shops for their stuff (this was the pre-internet era, so I couldn't just hop online and go crazy) and slowly built up my collection, as it wasn't easy to find their stuff. I got quite a few of their discs from Borders Bookstore, of all places. I really liked their older stuff, but it wasn't until I heard Waterfall Cities that I became a fanatic. Unlike most folks on these boards, I prefer their newer material over their classics - which to me is delineated by pre- and post-Waterfall Cities.
I envy you, Fyrwerx. You have a large and diverse catalog of material to discover and enjoy. If you really enjoy the electronica elements of the Ozrics, may I suggest that you check out OTT, Shpongle, Bluetech, Kurbeats, and Entheogenic.

I think it most was likely when I was a student some stoner friends of mine introduced me when we were round their float having a smoke and mushroom session. It's a bit vague as to the exact time and place. I think I had heard of them before that but not heard them if you see what I mean.

1994 stayed up all night tripping trying to find some new music on the radio. I think the only song that was even remotely interesting was a Tool song, not really though. Dawn came and I was driving home when the underground station played Sunhair simultaneously announcing they were playing a week later. The rest is history but they did answer me in my quest for new music just not while I was actively focusing on it. Since then Ed is like some kind of wizard in my mind. They not only supplied some of the best music I have ever laid ears on but the entire galaxy of other bands that came from this was like opening the flood gates.
So to me this is a cosmic experience just like the music they play. By the way, the show in Milwaukee '94 at Shank Hall was about the most mind blowing experience I have ever had. That place was just a bunch of jaws dragging on the ground in awe. I still remember thinking I had died and was in the next world.

I was around a friends house she was Irish and her husband French, he asked me my favourite band and I could really say, just said I was looking for a techno rock band that did ethnic tunes, he said had I heard of a band called Ozric Tentacles he lent me Become the Other and another. I had struck 'GOLD' bought many albums and it took me 2 months to get entire collection including box set which I bought from ebay.

That place was just a bunch of jaws dragging on the ground in awe. I still remember thinking I had died and was in the next world. I had a similar experience - though a little less fortunate. I was living in Lawrence, KS in '94 and had been listening to this public radio show on the weekends that played some really great, oddball stuff. The DJ was named Lonesome Cowboy Bill if that tells you anything. In any case, I would tape the shows while working nights, then listen later. On the tape he introduces this awesome band that played a killer show that night -- then he plays White Rhino Tea and a couple others. It only took one listen to realize this was going to be my new favorite band for a while. Then it dawned on me I had just missed the show -- and it was like 3 blocks from my apartment!!! They didn't come anywhere near the midwest until about 5 years later & I finally got to see them live.

I saw a Reddit post Four Years ago. That was a "If you're never heard of Ozric Tentacles get this one on your headphones". The link was to Dissolution. I fell madly in love with that song (except the ranting at the end). So I made it a point to listen to more Ozric then I I got their greatest hits Eternal Wheel and then I made it a point to listen to every album that had a song I loved (which was nearly all of them) all within the span of a weekend. Ever since then they have become the soundtrack to my life (I have about 130 Ozric songs on my phone more than any other band and still explore for more). I have been a Pink Floyd zealot for 20+years and Ozric was the first band I got into stronger than Floyd. I also won't stop insisting everyone I know listen to them. I tell people "I'm not being a Phish about this they're actually really amazing." The people that seem to be the most responsive to them are my friends that actually know music (musicians and people that study music) and my 8 year old niece. The average person doesn't seem to get it though.
It's maddening to me that they've been around for most of my life and I didn't hear about them until I was 33. When I looked into them I noticed that they had toured with Porno for Pyros around the time I was in High School. I hated Porno for Pyros (largely because of their fan base) so I may have heard about then Ozric but dismissed them by association. Damn I was idiot. I suspect if I did hear Ozric before, or around the time, I heard Dark Side of The Moon they would have become my favorite band . Then I wonder how that would have affected my depression?
Here is the Reddit post which changed my life and only has 2 upvotes. https://www.reddit.com/r/woahdude/comments/r5v43/if_youve_never_heard_ozric_tentacles_get_this_one/

yeah - this band is a closely guarded secret - like the address of a drug-dealer - you have to be more... subtle....

I was working at Tower Records (late 90's/early 00's), and i was the rock music buyer at the time. One of the reps from a record company have me copies of Erpland and Pungent Effulgent ( i guess they were being re-released), and the artwork alone was enough to get me to want to check them out. Then when i heard the music- well, it was like a revelation.

I first heard the 'Ozrics' one morning at about 3am on 'Invicta Radio' in 1989 or 1990... I had fallen asleep listening to the nightly rock show on the radio, and all of a sudden,I woke, thinking "oh my god!,this is the sort of music I have been wishing and waiting for,who is this band"?. At the end of the track, the presenter thankfully said "Ozric Tentacles".....
That was the start of a nigh on 30 year love affair with the 'Ozric's',and all their offspring!,'Noden's','Eat Static',and a load of the 'Planet Dog' off shoots too!....
'Children of the Bong',and 'Banco De Gaia',anyone?....LOL!.
Love them all!.

Nice one. I like Crystal Oscillations a bit more despite it having more amateur production values. I managed to get hold of their tapes (Children of the Bong and Banco De Gaia's too) through either Soulseek or Headduster blog - which I'd recommend if you haven't had a look already.

Hi All! I can't tell you how excited I have been to re-discover the Ozrics! My kids gave me music vouchers for a recent birthday so it made perfect sense to grab "Introducing" as I mislaid my previous Ozric purchases. I vaguely recall seeing them in a field at a festival, but I have no actual evidence. I might have seen them at Glasto once too. I definitely saw Eat Static a few times up at Shoreditch, London and loved the didgeridoo shenanigans. Anyhow, I did get in near the beginning and my first Ozrics purchase was Pungent Effulgent when it first came out in '89. As well as being an avid punk / psychedelic music fan, I was also a keen raver at the time, and so this beautiful fusion of Ozric-ness made perfect sense to me and still does. I missed a few albums "in the middle" so was blown away to read and hear all the stuff I'd missed. Listening to Jurassic Shift made me pull the car over on the way to work this morning, just so I could absorb" the experience more fully A good day to you all!

The fact that he's going through the trouble of ripping those mega rare tapes for everyone's benefit is amazing. I don't like all of his posts, but if it wasn't for him all this music would be lost forever.

Unfortunately,I missed out on the free festival scene, but only by a year or two!,so I had to rely on my slightly older 'compadre's' to tell me what I missed out on!.I have been told many a tale,of the 'good old days',from many an old associate!.....LOL!. Now though,I will have to make do,and sit back, whilst wearing either my 30 year old 'Freak Brothers' (if it even fits...LOL),or new 'Stonehenge Free Festival' T-Shirt,drinking a few cans of Krony!,dreaming of the day that the 'good times' may return.....

A few years ago Gavin said he was going to release some of the old tapes on CD. In the beginning it was the first three tapes and then a compilation from them. Nothing's happened since - that I'm aware of at least. There's a t least one thread on this forum about this. I understand people are busy but it's still a bit disappointing. Edit. Scratch that: www.facebook.com/The-Ullulators-122431247835200/ It's starting to take shape!

Hopefully the Ullulators' CDs will come out some time late this year-early next year? I'm assuming they will be limited edition - I wouldn't expect them to sell more than a few hundred copies - so I hope I find out about them in time so that they're still available. I must admit that I've only listened to Timeshard's tapes once or twice each so I can't remember much. The version of Cosmic Carrot on the Peel Your Head compilation is better than that on Crystal Oscillations though for sure. As are all the tracks on PYH. Of all the Planet Dog artists I wish Children of the Bong had released more stuff. Did you ever go to a Megadog party supernovaowner?
