I just started to upgrade my audio system. A much needed move as I was using an old Sherwood Amp from the 70s and some large although rather poor sounding Jenson speakers (they were only $300 for the pair, lots if not too much muddy bass).
For my upgrade, I went with a set of Klipsche FR-83 for my fronts, and rounded out the 5.1 system with Cerwin Vegas (would have liked to used Klipshe, but ran out of funds). The rest is all rather inexpenive stuff: An entry level Pioneer Receiver (that works very well for a $300 receiver). A separate Peavey 450wpc amp to power my fronts (again, I wish I had the money for an integated hi fi amp - this will have to do for now). Also using a cheap Panasonic Univerisal disc player. That will be upgraded next, funds allowing. The system sounds quite good because by luck I have nice room acoustics, and the new speakers have made a world of difference. Upgrade still in progress though. Just wanted to see what types of gear you OT fans were using.

All British stuff for me (apart from the cabling)
Amp - Audiolab 8000S - clean, clinical, driving, brilliant!
CD - Musical Fidelity A3 24-bit - lush, detailed, atmospheric, all-rounder
Speakers - Monitor Audio PMC703 - earth-shaking bass, controlled mid-range, sweet treble, very cohesive
All wired with Van den Hul hybrid (carbon/silver) cables - CS122 on the speakers, Thunderline between CD and amp (and DB103 II between soundcard and amp)
About £4000 worth of kit - and boy does it sound like it :-)

Sounds impressive. The disc player has always been a source of confusion for me - and actually how good they can be for the money. How is yours connected. Through analog I am assuming. Tell me a little more about the A3. Once thing that I have heard is that no matter how hi-fi or expensive a player is - the only way you will hear a difference is if they are connected analog.
