I've just been wondering, on the Pongmasters Ball dvd, what is that drum without a bottom head to Stu's left? He uses it for accents & it's got a nice echo to it, much appreciated.

Hi, From memory I think it's a snare drum with the bottom head and snares removed and pretty high tuning. He is basically trying to copy the sound of a drum called a Timbale which is pretty much the same thing and used a lot in Latin music ? Hope this helps

Yeah, at first I thought it might be a timbale, but then I got a better view of it in one shot & seen part of the badge on the drum & the letters "MA." I thought, ok, it's a Tama, but I didn't think they made timbales. So then I thought it might be a Tama mini-tymp, but I'm not sure if they made them back then, & it looked bigger than 10 inches." I then started thinking it might just be a Tama snare drum with the bottom head & snares removed & a coated top head torqued down a bit, just like you say. I'm gonna watch the dvd again & try to get a good look at it this time, a good shot of the badge & lugs. Thank you for your input, I appreciate it, you've probably confirmed what I ended up concluding about it, thx again.

Since you're a drummer bucketpod, who is your favourite Ozrics drummer?

Hmm, I'd say Rad & Metro are my favs, followed by Schoo & Merv. I'd have to listen to the rest of them again to list them in some "fav" order after those four, but Rad & Metro are right at the top for me, 1A & 1B.

I never saw Tig or Merv live, but of the rest my #1 is Schoo. They are all great in the studio, but live, as soon as Schoo had toured enough and had gelled with the band, he was amazing. Accurate, tight, inventive. Rad was awesome too but at times his fills were a bit overdone. I only saw Metro once and I can't quite remember his playing. Oli had a tendency to overplay, though by the end of his stint this had been toned down. Balazs is very tight too, I like his less-is-more, to-the-point, controlled style. From what I've seen in videos Merv was spot on too, something between Schoo and Balazs. Tig was a hero, drumming away to free-form jams, probably under the influence of something or other. I'm not a big fan of his snare sound though.
And I must say Ed is really good at drum programming.

I've only seen Metro & Ollie & my only frame of reference for Schoo is Pongmasters Ball & those few songs on Spirals In Hyperspace, I don't think he's on anything else right? I haven't spent much time on YouTube searching out footage either, but I do like Schoo's playing quite a bit & it would have been cool if he stuck around longer & did some studio recordings. As for overplaying, I don't mind a bit of overplaying, as long as it's tasteful & not too too much. I always wondered what they would sound like with a busier drummer anyway. Could you imagine what they would sound like with a guy like Marco Minnemann? Personally, it took me quite awhile to get rid of the "more is better" bug myself lol. I love Rad's playing on the studio stuff & Metro's on TFTFA. Someday I'll get around to checking these guys out more in a live setting on YT & audio recordings, but I listen to a lot of music & there's so much cool music & so little time lol. On a side note, is it just me, or are the drums on Technicians of the Sacred a bit down in the mix at times, maybe it's just my headphones?

Drummers I've seen are Merv, Shoo, Metro, Oliver, Balazs and Dominic and the best for me is Balazs.

Hi bucketpod, i just returned to Erp-peoples exile called facebook for a while, and got a pm from Stu some weeks ago, in which he mentioned his drummer timbales. It´s just a Tama 90s metal snare drum, 13" without strainer and reso drumhead. The sound of that drum is great if you watch the rehearsel on DVD, you can listen to it clearly, with delay even better, more dubby conqueror like... I once had the 12" Tama handhammered snare drum and converted it, which i sold and got a 12ply Keller maple shell 14" by 4 1/2" drummers timbale made by OCDP in cow chrome over wood with white smooth single ply drumhead by Remo. More open and warm wood sound (the best i ever played) and converted it into a snare drum, which is also gone these days. Nice to be back in this place!! Regards, Delay Lama

Hello Johannes, thank you for the info, much appreciated. I have a couple Rogers 5x14 Powertones lying around, think I'll set one up as a timbale & see what it sounds like. Just put my dvd on & I forgot about some of this rehearsal footage.
