Hi Everybody, coming back from an ozric live show march 2016 i just want to share some insights on the live setup( synths & midi) ozrics used ) - rig of silas has no midi in/out connected (roland fantom with footswitch, supernova2 , both operated standalone, which i found very interesting) - ed´s rig (roland d50) also no midi in/out, supernova2 midi in (sadly i couldnt get info about roland fantom 19" sampler while lurking around in front of the stage ) thought this will help some people here cheers johannes

hello Johannes, thanks for the post and for your good and pertinent observations. The drummer wears headphones to keep the beat, so presumably there is a midi click track or sequence through his phones. I have seen Ozrics a couple of times 'live' and there is no noticeable person who triggers the start of each track, however I was totally plastered both times so my observational skills were reduced! thinking this way does not in any way question the virtuosity of the band, but strives to understand how such virtuosity is achieved.
Ed Wynne is a musical genius, his melodies live in my mind

In the Sunrise Festival days, the sequencer / click track generator was clearly this device on top of the Novation: In the recent Fox Theater concert in Boulder, here it is: Indeed, it can be seen being activated in this video right here

nice one, thanks very much for your response. I'll keep an eye on the start of tracks when I see them at Hebden Bridge on sept 2nd. i'll also be watching out for synth arpeggios, cos if the synths aren't midi-linked to a clock then it must be difficult to keep the arpeggios in sync with the beat.. or am I just showing my complete lack of knowledge and experience !!
either way it's the music that does the talking, and Ozrics must be one of the hardest-working bands on the road, they seem to have so many tracks in their live repertoire.
greetings from the north of England to all Ozrics fans in Colorado

Thanks for that OP!.
When I asked Ed what keyboard to get as a MIDI controller for his Supernova,he said a Roland D-50,which I could not afford/find at the time,so ended up with a Roland 'Ed'-irol PSR 80...... I finally managed to get a D-50 in mint condition a couple of weeks back,so it is great to know Ed is still using his!.
The feel and sound of the D-50 is in a league of its own!,I can see why Ed has stuck with it all these years!.

these message board threads are bloody brilliant, such a wealth of information, there are a couple of threads on the same subject at: ozrics.proboards.com/thread/1400/ozric-sounds-synthesis-synth-geeksozrics.proboards.com/thread/1153i've just been listening to 'mooncalf' on 'live at Pordenone' which features Ed's delay guitar work alongside synth arpeggios, great stuff !! greetings to rytonjon, the cluny gig on bonfire night was awesome and memorable, and to ozricnutter, a true ozric fan. bye the way, there's a line at the end of conan the barbarian (1982). something about going back to the land of Ozric, wonder if that influenced the name selection

in response to Supernovaowner, thanks very much for your posting and the info about the Roland D-50. I have a Novation Xiosynth which has some great sounds and a basic arpeggiator, also a Korg Prophecy, which has a more sophisticated arp. and i use these for basic home recordings. one of these days when i make the time and money, i''m hoping to delve into the world of midi and sequencing, sounds like the d-50 may be the way to go.

No problem masterofnone53,just telling you what Ed told me!. I personally am loving the D-50 experience!.I only have a few old home synths from many years gone by,to judge it by though, and also a 10 year search may have a 'little' something to do with my love for it.... I am now trying, after a 7 year hiatus,to get my Ibanez GRG170DX and Zoom GT9.2tt set up to sound like Ed's Jem....Some hope, LOL!.

hi supernovaowner, definitely not a mainstream rock guitar sound or style ! i came across an interesting youtube collection of Ed's solos: For me it's the endless flow of new and re-worked melodies, and genre-defying musical ideas that set him apart. best of luck with the guitar sound, especially the hendrix-style wangy-bar deep distorted notes

The trouble with the GT9,is it has so many great sounds!,being a massive fan of 70's - 80's metal (Sabbath,Purple,Maiden,Priest,Saxon,Diamond Head, etc),I am spoilt for choice with the GT9,I now just need to upgrade my amplification,as I only have a 10 watt Acoustic Solutions guitar amp!.

hi there supernova, i've played in a couple of rock/soft rock/pop bands doing pub gigs, i'm a better bass player than lead, bit like Lemmy. ii like rock, hard rock and heavy metal all the way, but i also love 1970's jazz rock, jeff beck etc. and weird stuff like little feat, steely dan , zappa. i've always been drawn to spacey keyboards with a heavy guitar, nothing better, e.g. rainbow-tarot woman, steve miller-fly like an eagle, hawkwind- warrior, even camel- rain dances. i recently bought a zoom mrs802 8-track hard disc recorder for £100 on ebay, which has a drum machine and also lots of effects, easy to put down ideas. of course there is lots of software for pc but i prefer the big analogue buttons to a mouse. i hae it plugged throughth hi-fi which is any amount loud enough, although i usually wear headphones. synths can be really complicated too, and it pays to have the manual and take it step by step, i am currently working on the arpeggiator on the korg prophecy, it's great fun, gives an insight how the big boyys do it right, but most importanttly gives an outlet for the creative man inside us all - hey throw me in the shallow water before i get too deep, hi ho silver lining, everywher i go now baby, i see your sun is shining, but i won't make a fuss, no it's obvious. Colin B Hi again Colin B!, Hats off to you my friend!. I personally have always been more of critical listener than a creator!,not to say I don't have any creative ideas mind!..... I just don't have any skills!.I will be the first to admit it!. It has taken me 10 years to even move even one knob on Ed's Supernova,as I didn't want to mess up his presets!.In fact, the Supernova has been in an airtight bag for the last 10 years! ( i went through the presets when I first got it though)!,and it is only since getting the Roland D 50,that I have pulled the Supernova out from its cryogenic chamber!.... (I bought it as a collectors piece, more than an everyday instrument). About 10 years ago,I had 'Reason 3' on the computer, but apart from playing very basic tunes on the MIDI/USB keyboard, using the presets provided, that was as far as it got.Way too complicated for my old brain!. I have found that using the D 50,I can come up with some very 'off the wall' tunes (?) of my own,but TBH,they all resemble 'Jocelyn Pook's,The Masked Ball',minus the awesome reversed chanting!,but all very dark nonetheless,LOL!. I have tried reading instruction manuals too....But I am dyslexic,so that doesn't help either!. But Ill keep at it!. Just got the 'Songster' app on my phone,so going to give the guitar a bit more practice!. All the best. Mike PS,see my top 10/20 albums to get a taster of what music I like here..... ozrics.proboards.com/thread/1040/top-10-favorite-albums?page=2

hi Mike, i would love to hear the story about how you got your hands on the Supernova ! Ebay!.... I was searching the ad's and the Supernova turned up!,so after many questions sent to the seller (Ed's brother),and a good few phone calls later,I put in a bid, then as the price was going up,I put in a VERY silly 'snipe' bid at the last moment.I have to be honest though,if I was in my 'right mind' at the time,I probably would not have bid as high as I did!. But,I ended up as the winning bidder, and I ended up driving from the east coast of Norfolk,to a car park in Frome, with my 5 year old daughter,to pick it up.... Ed's brother gave me a phone number to ring when I got to the car park in question, and after about 20 mins Ed and Brandi turned up in an old VW Polo.... Well,my daughter was running around, stretching her legs after the long drive,so I had a good chat with Ed and Brandi, and I probably made a right prat of myself,as I have been a huge fan of the Ozrics,Nodens,Eat Static, from about 1989,so to actually meet them,I was a bit 'starstruck',to say the least!.I must of shook Ed's hand 10 times, and my 5 year old 5 times....LOL! But anyway,Ed asked me if I would like him to sign it,needless to say,I said 'YES'!,so he did, with a nice little non personalised message.... We then exchanged a considerable wad of cash for a synth!. We then said our goodbyes, and I made my way back home... A long day,but one I will never forget!.

wow, thanks very much for telling the tale, Mike, that's an absolutely fantastic story, i have a great big smile on my face just visualising the scene !! i have a list of questions i would like to ask Ed, as do all fans, but i imagine it all goes out of your head when the moment comes. i think they are very aware just how revered they are, and yet Ed comes across as such a humble unassuming sort of fellow, a gentleman one might say.

by the way Mike, i've just read your post from jan 2011 mentioning that the supernova was used in the production of waterfall cities, truly awesome piece of electronic rock music. there must be more ex-Ozrics equipment out there, not quite as valuable as a Hendrix guitar but fascinating rock-memorabilia nonetheless

by the way Mike, i've just read your post from jan 2011 mentioning that the supernova was used in the production of waterfall cities, truly awesome piece of electronic rock music. there must be more ex-Ozrics equipment out there, not quite as valuable as a Hendrix guitar but fascinating rock-memorabilia nonetheless Cheers buddy!, When I was talking to Ed and Brandi,I did ask if the Supernova had also been used on either 'Pyramidion',or 'The Hidden Step',as they sounded very alike to me,(the synth presets),and Brandi seemed to think it was (Ed couldn't remember...LOL). So when I got it home and ran through all the 'presets' (about 30-40 of Ed's own) there were (are) a good few presets that sound VERY like they fitted into 'Pyramidion',and also 'Tight Spin'.... The rest are blatantly 'Waterfall City' style presets!.I can play 'Waterfall Cities' on CD,and play the Supernova at the same time, and it sounds identical.... I was going to sell the Supernova a few years back,as I hit 'hard times',but I am glad I didn't,as like you say,it may not be Jimi's upside down Strat, but it certainly means a hell of a lot to me!. Now if only 'Jumping' John would sell his flute.... Or if only Joie or Merv would let go of some of their 'Implant' day's gear... I am listening to 'Eat Static' Live in Frome 94 as I type.....LOL!
