When i was kid, my mum and dad had music on in the house nearly all the time. Now i was born in 72, so my first memories of listening to their music would be from the late 70's and on through the eighties. Now there were some albums, looking back, are maybe not quite my cup of tea now, but i can see the merits in em' and why my parents would listen to them back then. But then there was some stuff back then, and my first thought is WTF. So here goes, albums/music i grew up with as a kid, remember some are alright, and some, well it weren't my fault:-
Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield. Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd. Out Of The Blue - ELO. Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs - Derek And The Dominoes.
So far so good... it gets worse...
Phil Spectors Sounds Spectacular. ( It didn't) Abba's Greatest Hits. A dodgy Neil Sedaka album with a rainbow on the cover. Even Now and Barry - Barry Manilow. (painful)
Face Value and No Jacket Required - Phil Colllins. Love Over Gold and Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits. (Still think Telegraph Road and the song Brothers In Arms are pretty good, on this site, that probably puts me in a minority).
And the first coupke of albums i had, which were my albums and no one else's, and i take it on the chin, i did ask for em', i got on tape... Prince Charming - Adam And The Ants, and Raiders Of The Pop Charts, (least said about that the better).

In my case it was 99% Greek radio music, which at the time (80s) was a mixture of relatively arty stuff -lyrically mainly- pop and contemporary pop-folk. My father did enjoy early Beatles though. They are the only band from my early youth I can still enjoy, though I much prefer what they did from Revolver onward.
The first album I bought for myself must have been Maiden's debut, and I went on with more metal albums, probably Metallica's Ride the Lightning. That was early 1990. Ozrics came in the picture late '96, at uni.
Nowadays I still enjoy a lot of my early albums, but I mostly listen to electronic music - which I absolutely loathed as a teenager. There's just something about psychedelic synths that resonates with me...
What I have come to feel increasingly distant from is music scenes, the cultural aspect of genres. Quite probably because a) I got disillusioned with scenesters' attitudes (metalheads, rockers, crusties, psytrancers) and b) there are no such scenes where I live.

Hi all,
I'll never forget sitting in my uncles room being sonically assaulted with Planet Gong Ali Baba Black sheep and Hawkind aged around 8 but didn't really like it. It didn't take long though before I changed my mind and started to raid his tape collection, then came Ozrics,Gong,Treatment,Krel,Here and now etc......Although I loved the music and still do it was a pretty lonely listening experience at around 10 years old. But then the 90's came and so did THC and LSD for me and my friends.... Needless to say I was no longer alone.

Has that made you perpetually fed up with it Dan? Well I don't listen to it at all! I do wonder if to some degree my potential to appreciate it now was undermined by hearing it all the time (radio was on most days). But I can't deny growing up around music and being forced to play it as a kid has had its benefits in terms of musical training. You could say I respect classical music from a distance...

My family had music playing quite a bit, my mom & dad played Motown & Philly soul, especially The Temptations & The O'Jays & 60's rock, my grandma played 50's-60's country, rockabilly, lots of Elvis & my uncle played 70's classic rock. First band I really got into though was Kiss, I wanted to be just like Peter Criss lol. A friend of mine back then got me into Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin & Pink Floyd & to this day they are still my 3 favorite bands. I started taking drum lessons in 1979 & my teacher got me into jazz & fusion. The first album he let me borrow was Lenny White's "Adventures of Astral Pirates," & then Billy Cobham's "Spectrum" & Return To Forever's "Romantic Warrior" & those albums instantly changed my perception of drumming. The first 4 albums that I learned how to play songs off of were Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti, Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, Billy Joel's 52nd Street & then a few songs from Astral Pirates. I've loved music since I can remember.
