cmon besty play along eh ...unplugged it may be and different it would be...but u just know it would be good eh I Carnt stand acoustic music myself,& like i said its the electronic-sonics that makes the Ozrics music special, without it it wouldnt be the Ozrics. Each to there own but what happens when the solar flares (flairs?) take out the power grid? I've got all the Ozrics official stuff except Tantric Obstacles, so I know where you're coming from Bestbass. However, there are moments of acoustic guitar playing that leave me wanting more. Eg. Gift of Wings, Zoemetra, Saucers. Ok they all have synths as well, but my comment about acoustic stuff was first mentioned at the time of the studio/home fire. I'd listen to Ed and cohorts playing if they were just using banjo and washboard. The synths are fantastic and have endless possibilities but it would be good to hear a full album of say, acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, koto, oud, clay drums, flutes..... It won't happen but it's a dream I have. Anyway, most so called acoustic albums are treated with echoes, delays etc - it's all in the ears of the beholder. Probably I'll make the album myself - an acoustic tribute to the Ozrics. Possible tracks off the top of my head: Papyrus, Vibuthi, Sploosh! (If Page and Plant can do acoustic Kashmir I can do Sploosh!).

I reckon what makes the Ozrics special is the very combination of the organic with the synthesised. Take one of those elements away and it's not the Ozrics anymore. Sure there are purely organic ((Omnidirectional) Bhadra) as well as purely electronic tunes (studio Sploosh - minus Paul's percussion) but I just can't imagine a full Ozric album without both elements.
I remember an interview with Ed in the late 90s, where he said that the guitar bits are quite easy and quick to make, whereas the synths take him a lot longer, which has led me to believe they are the main focus in the vast majority of his tunes.

I am dead against acoustic sets - bloody awful generally - with a few exceptions. Saying that, the acoustic parts of Ozrics are superb and add an extra dimension, but I need some space.

Brandi,
Great to see the new Erpland pics! Godspeed to Ed for a speedy recovery. I know how he feels about tubes and such sticking our of your body.
I sent a message to you earlier about how I'd like to contribute to getting you back on your collective feet musically. Looking forward to hearing from you about that.

the acoustic thing could be possible. but among the worst of my fears is that something like that might ever be done in a rush - i personally didn't respond too well to the remix album as it tended to remove too much of what makes the tunes ozric, and a project like this faces similar and different challenges. a large ensemble or partial orchestra might be able to do this, but it would take so much work on the orchestration (to let everyone know what to play through notation (unless there is some other way?). For each instrumental section, playing their part of the synths' frequency range, you'd need to let them all know what little blips and swishes to play in multi-layered time-stretching arpeggios and varying pulse-width LFOs with ping-pong delay-style repetition and banked filter-sweep simulations just seems really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really tough - even if italian style stave notation didn't just look like tadpoles sitting on a fence anyway!) working with synths and effects is a fundamentally different way of thinking than trying to interlace multiple instrumental parts into a single continuum. Personally I can imagine some people having the skills being able to do it, but i'm pretty sure the usual intense training in note-focussed mentality that such people go through would render them blind to what this is all about. It is doubtful if anyone highly trained in orchestral thinking way of composition would hear enough in this music to be able to do a good job. It's almost inevitable that someone would just go "right - here are the notes for bass, here for middles, here for highs, distributed to instrumental sections - done". But that misses the point to such an unacceptable degree that it would make it seem like if the artist has allowed this to be done then he must therefore have no understanding of the impression he makes upon the minds of his listeners, which is of course so so very very wrong.
with suitably subtle orchestration and layering, things could be achieved that would turn even the cynics; just it would be such a monumental task that to pull it off would shake the earth, whilst it would be so much easier to decide to do something like this and then rush it and end up with something half-assed that would annoy and embarass everybody from the band to the fans and the acoustic / orchestra people alike. I know I've written a lot about orchestra here but can't imagine getting that synthy richness of texture in any smaller ensemble.

I've only just read about what had happened to Ed, shocking news so I'm hoping he's back on the road to a full recovery:-) I don't do hero worship but Ed is my exception to the rule. Ozrics' music has been a huge part of my life since 86 and it's the main constituent of my life's soundtrack. I'd love to sit and chat with Ed one day he seems such a happy affable geezer of which there's a sad lack of in the world. Get well soon buddy:-)
