Hey fellow Ozric fans...
I have an opportunity to do an interview with Ozric Tentacles this Thursday (June 4). We'll be recording the interview and then editing it for broadcast on my radio show. It will be aired on my June 16th show since the goal is to help promote the Yumyum Tree release and the Pittsburgh concert on June 19.
So anyway....
I'm new to this whole interviewing thing, so tips from those who have done it before are appreciated.
And also, I could use some question ideas too. The thing is that most of the folks listening probably won't know much about the Ozrics, so general questions would probably be better than really specific fan-oriented questions.
Any suggestions?

how does the current sound differ from your many UK releases ? what other groups can people use to recognise your sound ? what is your music FOR ? should people of a nervous disposition be warned off listening to your music ? what about pregnant and breastfeeding mothers ?

Hi,
We once had a nice visit and fun with another person from there ... and in essence, the best and most important thing is ... turn on the microphone and go ... if you have dinner before hand, talking about something on the air will not be an issue.
The person in that interview was Robin Williamson, and between him and the host ... they tore up the airwaves for a couple of hours and we even got to hear some turtle jokes and some Kissinger jokes ... ohh well ... we'll all be begging nickels on Main St tomorrow ... but the fun and the conversation was ... priceless ... and you got to meet ... a real person! Not a star ... a real person.
Not to say that you have to have a script ... but in general, if "meeting a person" is the situation, I don't think that you will have problems and will enjoy it much more than ... "meeting a star" ... where you can't forget to throw the rose petals on the ground first ... you know what I mean.
I'm sure they can tell you about their adventures and how even Brandi became the bass player and all that ... as for the music ... ask them how it differs? How do they see it in the progression of their music and work, considering the vast catalogue? Do they miss some of the people they worked with before? (John for example) ... will they still have that "different" touch that sometimes brought it away from most conventional music and sounds? ...
Hope this helps

dj firefly, my advice is , do some research and then try and find an entertaining slant on topic , be courteous and respectful , i was thinking how to give a good interview the other week , so these are ideas i had . traditionally there will be things the interviewed would like to discus and there will be things the interviewer would like to ask , try and keep things positive and as free from ego as possible . there's no shortage of ego mania in a lot of interviews , go for sincere quality over excessive arrogance or modesty .

Here's what I would presently ask: 1. Ask 'em "What are the origins behind the title of the song 'O-I', a number which has remained a staple of their setlist for years and years? (of course pronounced ahh-eee)".. I have lately been wondering if it means anything outside of matching up to the rythym of the chourus... I have heard it with lyrics sung along to it from back in the early days... ahh-eee, ahh-eee... ahh-eee, ahh-eee... 3. Ask 'em "What is the remaining tour schedule? (The interview from Seattle didn't provide a full listing of upcoming shows so perhaps you can do that to help them get folks from all around to catch a tour date somewhere along the line)... JUNE: 05 Fox Theatre, Boulder, CO • 10 The Loft, Barfly, Minneapolis, MN • 11 The Terrace, University Of Wisconsin, Madison, WI • 12 The Abbey, Chicago, IL • 14 The Intersection, Grand Rapids, MI • 18-2009 Beachland Ballroom, Cleveland, OH • 19 Club Cafe, Pittsburgh, PA • 20 B.B. King's Blues Club, New York, NY • 21 Club Metronome, Burlington, VT • 23 Johnny Brenda's, Philadelphia, PA • 24 Canal Club, Richmond, VA • 25 The 8x10, Baltimore, MD • 26 State Theatre, Falls Church, VA SEPT: 06 Prog Day, Storybook Farm, Chapel Hill, NC • any more TBA?

What music are you listening to this week? What's your favourite Ozric album? Favourite top 3 Ozric tunes? Does it pay well being a full time Tentacle? Is there a pension plan?

What have been some of your favourite gigs you've done and why? What would you regard as your best show? Do you think you might perform on the Pyramid stage again some day? Where in the world would you like to gig that you have not been to? Will you release something a bit special for your 30th year as a band?

How about having an Ozrichestra for the 30th Birthday, and having all ex members back for a special gig ?

Hi,
Considering their history ... and output ... a good question would be ... where does the group "Ozric Tentacles" go from here ... or ... is it a concept that develops over time and changes accordingly, or is there a concetrated effort to create something in a special way ...
Would like to hear/see/do ... Ed on a solo album ... and he must play all the instruments ... produced by Nick Mason!

Horror alert :Produced by Michael Winner lookalike Nick Mason ?
In gods name why ? All he does is buy expensive cars and helicopters AND he's a drummer. First rule of production, don't let the drummer touch anything.
Besides which, consensus on here seems to be saying that Ed has just released 3 solo cds one after the other.

I have to say hipgnosis may be having a joke about Green being produced by Nick Mason?
Anyway, without being overly flattering I have to say no-one produces records the way I like to hear them like Ed. Asking someone else to produce would be like Hendrix asking someone to play some lead guitar on his tunes.
As for questions...I wonder if Ed would still like his own Ibanez model as he mentioned years ago in a sound on sound interview. Oh....and which guitarists tickle him nowadays.

Another one. I was watching some zither videos earlier on youtube and wondered if Ed still has his koto. Haven't heard it on a tune for so long, maybe it has been there but very subtely mixed in.

Hey all, Thank you so much for all the great questions and advice. I think I used just about all of your questions in the interview (and those who suggested them have received karma points - thank you). The interview went quite well - I spoke with Ed for about half an hour and some fascinating tidbits came out too. Those who were complaining that The Yumyum Tree and other recent releases have been mostly just Ed by himself will be especially interested to hear our discussion of where the band is headed... I will be airing the interview during my radio show on Tuesday June 16, 2009 from 7-9pm Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). That's UTC/GMT 23:00 (we're at UTC-4 here). 6pm Central time, 5pm Mountain, 4pm Pacific. Anyone who happens to be in Pittsburgh, PA, USA can tune their radios to WRCT - 88.3FM. Everyone else can listen to our live internet stream by going to wrct.orgEnjoy!!

Tantalizing!!! Collaborations with local musos maybe? Please post a link to be able to hear/read the whole interview at your own time at some point, as I don't think I'll be able to hear it live...

Didn't get a google alert about this but...
Tom Bovis of legandary 70s rock supergroup "Creme Brulee" has indicated that it would be rather nice to join festival stalwarts Ozric Tentacles on their USA tour. Tom will be appearing on upright piano at a few dates.. Tom says "it's a reet bad business is't music business lad tha nose".

Great interview djfirefly, really enjoyed it. Especially the bits where Ed said he's missed jamming and where he mentions European cities as some of his favourite for gigs...There's still hope for us Europeans!

I finally got a chance to roll the interview reel into my ears and I think you did a great job djfirefly... Your line of questioning led to answers which inspired me as an artist more than most OT interviews which I have absorbed.
