Here's the link to a few small snippets of the cassette album remastering. As they say, the proof of the pudding... mh-uk.net/audio/ozrics/

I think you've done a really good job there, although the original sound quality has never bothered me. Good luck with getting them released.

that was a pleasure. always took for granted that they sounded like that. i hope the band take on these masters and get them released... or at least a double CD thing (like Afterswish) with all the choice tracks on it. have a karma

Wow. It's reassuring to get such a positive response (and a karma - cheers indeed brujoman).
All the energy and inspiration to do this came from chatting to Ed just before their last Bristol gig. Even by my best expectations I only expected to get this half done, but once I got into it, it took me. It's was if these songs had a will of their own and wanted to be restored!
I'm going to their gig in Exeter next week. The plan is to give Ed or Brandi the CDs. That aside it'll be great to see them play again so soon after the last gig.

Sounds great mate, must admit the crappy sound quality of the originals, never really bothered me either. Some bands when they rerelease their albums remastered, i think they can sometimes lose something, the pristiness takes some of the character away, but with bands like Floyd and the Ozrics, their music is ment to be heard in high definition and hopefully in a few years to come we might get 5.1 sound mixes of the Ozrics albums to really immerse ourselves in. Here's a Karma point, good job mate.

Cheers again. Gone from 0 karma to 3 in 24 hours!
Good point Watermill - a lot of remasterings do lose their original character. I was careful to be subtle so there would still be a mimimum amount of hiss in certain places to prevent the sound being muffled or smothered, which is often a problem of bad remastering. Also I felt it would be sacrilege to overly sanitise the sound of that era this music comes from.

great stuff - count me in. How cool is that? Somebody cleaning up old Ozrics stuff? Well done young man. Hat definitely "off". I also thought the originals were great.

Only two more days and I'll be handing over the remasters to Ed in Exeter. Can't wait.
Incidentally I am surprised so few people on this forum have responded to this thread. I appreciate that all five of my Karma points so far have come from this thread, but the response dried up quickly, and it's making me feel like Vitamin Re-Enhanced won't be the success I hoped for.
I live in hope though...

I would've responded but I can't figure out how to play the snippets. I can assure you though, if they make a proper reissue, with complete artwork etc I will buy the albums/box set.

The snippets should automatically play as embedded players. You just press play.
I'd recommend you use another web browser. It works on a Mac in Safari and Firefox. If you're using Microsoft Internet Explorer it may be a problem, but anything Microsoft usually is!

It doesn't really matter, since I see that whoever's listened to them is congratulating you on a job well done, I think I can trust them.

Just for the record it works fine in Internet Explorer 9 on Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8. What's with the gratuitous Microsoft bashing? Perhaps the OP was using an iPad?

I thought the whole point of the existence of Microsoft was to be gratuitously bashed. I see armageddon being caused by Windows XP.

As according to plan I gave the CDs and a USB stick of the songs to the band last night in Exeter. They were very positive about it when I handed it to them and ask one of their techies to put it somewhere safe. Unfortunately they were a bit preoccupied because of technical and sound issues, but one of the tour entourage told me that they were very excited about receiving the remasters and that they will definitely be in touch with me. Cool. Anyway, it was a great gig last night. The support band pulled out and the Ozrics played 2 sets! The only problem was that they were having sound issues in that venue, but by the second half of the second set the sound was spot on, and what started out as a ropey gig sound wise, slowly ascended into an amazing night. I've seen them twice in one month and am blown away. Can't wait till their next tour.

Nice one, mission accomplished i guess That must have been a lot of work, i'm sure they are chuffed that a fan would do that. Exeter started off quite mellow soundwise (and audience wise) but as you said, kicked off during the second half ! A 3 hour gig in the end.... Managed to see them 3 times this tour and i would like to say thanks to the band for some great nights. Please keep coming back

Tonight is the last gig of the tour, they should be off to America soon after. We should be hearing about this project in a short while I hope. I hope it's not just a digital-only release.

nice job Opaquelens! I would really love to have a new excuse for buying more Ozrics material. You know I've always loved the "original" tapes, because of the music and that the hiss and low quality of those recordings made me feel like these were some friends recording in a garage or a mill, and they handed the copy to some friends to listen to. I Love that vibe but i would be lying if I said I wasn't exited with the Idea of a Remastered Box set. Have a Karma for your dedication to OT. Thank you!

I havent posted on this forum many times before really. Just wanted to say though this is a pretty damn decent job all told. I too always loved the tapes for their organic sound. I love the analog feel and the poor mastering and hiss does add to the atmosphere.
Having said that, what I like about what you've done here is that, instead of ramp up the volumes on everything to make all the instruments loud, which is often what goes for remastering these days, but you've really brought out the music. It's not just about reducing hiss. This has more of a feel of a digital restoration than a remastering. The work on Tidal Otherness is great. You're right, it does sound like a chewed up tape, and you've definitely cleaned it up. And who knew that those blips at he beginning of Dharma Reggae were unintentional? Keep up the good work.
How many tunes have you done so far?

How many tunes have you done so far? Yeah there's this thing in the music industry called the 'loudness war' - they use a maximising limiter to flatten the dynamics out and make the music sound loud on computers and tinny stereos, which is quite ironic because in the analogue days they were doing the opposite - preserving the sound quality to be as hi fi as possible! I used only a tiny amount of maximising limiter, only to make the drums sound punchier, and not too much at the expense of the dynamic range. In total there were 80 songs needing doing. It's all in the hands of the band now. I'm hoping to hear from them when they finish the Italian leg of the tour and go back to America.
